Colin Chapman, Keith Duckworth and Mike Costin worked together to create the greatest engine motor sport has ever seen. The DFV powered F1 cars from 1967 to 1985, an astonishing 19 seasons in the rarified atmosphere of Grand Prix where innovation was king and one season’s World beater would be next season’s backmarker.

In the 70s and 80s the team was in the habit of keeping the pistons from rebuilds to use as VIP gifts. Each engine’s pistons were labeled and stored; not all were presented.

With reference to the team’s archives we are able to identify the detail competition history for the engines in which the pistons ran. A great deal of polishing, then mounting on a wooden plinth, complete with presentation placque, makes a rather special item of memorabilia.

Classic Team Lotus also keeps the pistons from the rebuilds of the engines it maintains, and they are available also.

Elio was a great racing driver and a wonderful person. He drove more Grand Prix for Lotus than anyone else and led the team through the trauma of losing its founder, Colin Chapman.

In his brilliant career Elio won three Grand Prix and was a title challenger in 1985 when he faced and met, better than most, the challenge of having Ayrton Senna as a team mate.
